Ghana defender Daniel Opare was handed a Bundesliga debut by Augsburg on Saturday afternoon and he excelled in an unusual midfield role as Fuggerstädter defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 at their favourite Weserstadion.

Augsburg manager Markus Weinzierl introduced the 25-year-old signed from FC Porto into his midfield and he shored things up with a solid defensive display combined with impressive pace and intelligent distribution.

The experienced Christoph Janker and Philipp Max held down their places as first choice options for the lateral defensive roles.

Iceland international Alfred Finnbogason scored 8 minutes into the second-half to cancel out Florian Grillitsch opener for the before Jeong-Ho Hong sealed the win for the visitors with three minutes of normal time left to play.

Opare was booked for tripping a Bremen player on the 50th minute mark.

Though Opare had been in the Augsburg first team squad for the Europa League game against Liverpool, the game on Saturday was his first competitive game for the German top-flight side.
