Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo says he is satisfied with the output of striker Jordan Ayew despite recent criticism from fans.
The 25-year-old's contributions so far have been slammed as "lackadaisical" in the wake of the club's disappointing start to the season.
On Tuesday, the former Lorient man netted his first league goal of the campaign in a 1-1 stalemate with Barnsley, a result which leaves the club with only a win in 10 matches so far.
"He [Ayew] has been playing consistently at a very good level," Di Matteo said on Thursday.
"I must say if you look at his stats from the first game onwards, he’s always put the effort in.
"You can’t recognise it in his facial expression.
"He’s not a guy who maybe smiles too much on the pitch.
"But I can tell you he always puts an effort in, puts everything in for the team, gives his all and the stats confirm that every single game."
According to Whoscored.com, the Marseille-born emerged Man of the Match in three of his last five matches for the club.
He netted seven times in 30 Premier League appearances for the Claret and Blue Army last season.
