Ex-Ghana youth star Bernard Don Bortey has taken a jab at Ghana coach Avram Grant over his selection criteria.
The 33-year-old, who burst on the scenes during the 1999 FIFA U17 World Cup in New Zealand, feels selection into the Black Stars is not based on merit.
"The coach's [Avram Grant] selection criteria for call-ups is not the best. Most of these current squad do get invitation not on merits. It's just a favour that they get to play for the national side," he told Alpha FM.
The former Chelsea manager has courted criticism from Ghana fans over his scouting and monitoring policy of Ghanaian players based abroad.
But Grant has handed recent call-ups to debutantes Samuel Tetteh, Evans Mensah and Kadri Mohammed all from the local league while Leicester City's Joe Dodoo has also trained with the Black Stars in Accra.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey marked his debut for the Black Stars in the 2017 AFCON qualifier against Mauritius.
Astana FC striker Patrick Twumasi was also handed his debut call-up but failed to play.
Bortey scored nine (9) in 27 senior appearances for Ghana between 2002 and 2006.
