Election Of FA boss: Today Is D-Day

Wed, 14 Apr 2004 Source: --

The Executive Council of Ghana football will today give the sport a new direction when a new Management Board is elected to steer the affairs of the regulatory body ? GFA.

When the Council meets today, much attention will be on the much-awaited election for the next GFA Chairman with a three-year mandate.

The government, by law, nominates two candidates, one of whom is elected chairman, with the loser automatically becoming a member of the five?member board. At today?s election, one-time Accra Hearts of Oak chairman, Dr N. Nyaho-Tamakloe, is highly tipped to beat off a challenge from Dr Kofi Amoah, to succeed Mr Ben Koufie, the outgoing GFA boss.

The two government nominees are also members of Ghana?s 2008 Nations Cup Bid Committee, which is headed by Dr Amoah of Progeny Ventures. In the run-up to the GFA election, it has been speculated that Dr Amoah will step down at the eleventh hour to render the election a no-contest, for Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, a private medical practitioner, to be automatically elected as chairman.

This emerging non-competitive election was recently criticised by former GFA Chairman, Nana Sam Brew-Butler, who believes that an election is a necessity in order to strengthen the elected chairman?s mandate.

Under the present GFA Constitution, the Vice-Chairman of the Management Board must be the second-in-command of GHALCA, the league clubs? welfare body. GHALCA has one other slot on the FA board

GHALCA meanwhile is preparing to go to congress at which its Vice-Chairman and the other board member will be elected. The FA constituent members will take the other one slot on the management board. Beyond the important task of electing the new GFA Management Board, the FA?s Congress ? highest decision making body of Ghana football ? will on Thursday congregate in Accra to debate major issues facing the sport, including GHALCA?s blueprint for restructuring the premier league and, perhaps, another comprehensive blueprint initiated by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to restructure Ghana Football.
