Accra, Oct 29, GNA - The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that it will revive the FA Cup Championship this season. The annual event, which took place in 2003, has been held up due to non-availability of sponsorship.
Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the GFA told GNA Sports on Wednesday that his outfit has settled on a sponsor, which has doled out a reasonable package for the competition.
As per tradition, Mr Nyantakyi explained that the competition will involve clubs from the Premier, First and Second divisions and will be organised in a Knockout format.
Conventionally, the winner of the FA Cup automatically qualifies for the CAF Confederation Cup, formerly CAF Cup Winners Cup with the format to be limited to the placing at the end of the soccer season. The return of the FA Cup therefore means that the annual Super Cup, formerly "Champion of Champions" will also come off this season. The third and fourth placed clubs since 2004 has instead represented the nation in the newly created competition.
The clash is usually between the winners of the League and the FA Cup to determine the champion club of a particular season. Accra Hearts of Oak was decorated the "Champion Club" for the last time in 2002 after clinching the double of League and FA Cup.
