Financial Position of FA Improving - Chairman

Mr Ben Koufie, chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said the national soccer governing body is gradually getting out of the financial predicament that had bogged it over the years.

He told the GNA Sports on Thursday that the financial position of the GFA was "getting better than before but was not flamboyant" and that a more vigorous and aggressive marketing strategy was needed to swell their coffers.

Consequently, he said the management would intensify its efforts to get sponsors, not only for the national teams, but also for the technical crew, who were recently appointed.

Mr Koufie said until sponsors are found, the GFA would be responsible for the payment of salaries and entitlements due to the technical personnel.

He said the coaches would soon be called upon to undergo in-service training and orientation courses before they assume duty, adding that their contributions would enhance an accelerated development of Ghana football.

The chairman disclosed that the coaches would be assigned other roles in the developmental programme when their national teams do not have assignments.

"They will be involved in our grass-root development programmes to unearth and groom hidden talents for the various national teams."

On the appointment of a substantive General Secretary for the GFA, Mr Koufie hinted that the position would be filled before the end of the year, adding that it is not easy picking one candidate from a field of 15 who were interviewed.

He described the Black Stars preparations for Cup of African Nations (CAN) 2002 which gets underway in Mali in January as encouraging.

"As at yesterday 21 of the 25 players invited were in camp and it is very encouraging. I am happy about that, the training is going on well."
