Ghana's CAN2004 Group: Rwanda Shock Uganda

Sat, 7 Jun 2003 Source: .

Rwanda secured a remarkable 1-0 away victory over Uganda in the Nations Cup qualifiers for the 2004 finals Group 13. Jimmy Gatera got the only goal for the visitors in the 40th minute.

Uganda maintains their lead in the group, which include Ghana, but they will have to win in Kumasi, on June 22, to have any chace of qualification.

Ghana, on the other hand, will have to get a win and a draw in their last two games to qualify

Controversy mars Rwanda win

Rwanda shocked Uganda's Cranes with a 1-0 win in Kampala in Group 13, but their victory was soured by claims that their goalkeeper, Muhamud Mossi, had tried to influence the result with witchcraft.

Rwanda's win came thanks to a 37th minute strike by Jimmy Gatete, who slotted past substitute goalkeeper Postnet Omwony after a defensive mix-up.

The home side had lost first choice goalkeeper Ibrahim Mugisha after getting a knock from Rwanda's Belgium-based player Desire Mbonabucya.

But before the goal there was serious controversy after Mossi lit an unknown substance in his goal.

Uganda's players tried to remove it, but Rwanda's refused to let them.

An ugly fight - involving both players and officials - ensued.

The Rwandans eventually left the pitch, and the game was held up for a total of 25 minutes until order was restored.

The controversy was a shame for Rwanda, who took charge of the midfield from the word go.

However, Uganda missed good chances through Hakim Magumba, skipper Edgar Watson and Tabula, who had his chance kiss the woodwork.

" It is a sweet win," Rwanda's Yugoslav coach Rotamir Duksovic said after the game.

"Let us wait for Ghana in Kigali."

Uganda's Argentine coach Pasculli refused to comment after the match.

The defeat dented Uganda's hopes of making it to Tunisia 2004, while Rwanda moved into second place, and Ghana are now third with three points.
