Ghana to spend $70 million on stadia

Ghana is to spend between 50 and 70 million US dollars for the construction of two new stadia and rehabilitation of the Accra and Kumasi ones towards the hosting of the 2008 edition of the African Cup of Nations (CAN).

The new multi-purpose stadiums will be sited at Sekondi-Tarkoradi and Tamale.

Mr Kofi Amoah, Chairman of the country's CAN 2008 bid committee said in Accra on Wednesday that the money would be raised through the local and foreign private sectors with a government of Ghana component.

Already, the committee has had some proposals from foreign companies, which develop stadiums around the globe for study, and will soon take a decision on them.

Two other countries, Algeria and Ethiopia are also contesting for the only slot to host Africa's biggest soccer fiesta but Mr Amoah sounded very optimistic that Ghana would win the bid.

His optimism stems from the fact that Tunisia and Egypt are hosting the next two editions, thus, 2004 and 2006 and thinks it will be unfair for CAF to give the 2008 to yet another North African country. And between Ghana Ethiopia, the Chairman sees the four time African Champions, Ghana, as favourites.

Ghana last co-hosted the tournament with neighbouring Nigeria in 2000, which was won by Cameroon, beating the Super Eagles on penalties.

Mr Amoah said the bid document states the facilities already available and the ones intended to be built before the fiesta.

The new stadiums will have facilities for other games such as hockey among others, and would have attached to each stadium, a game's village. The facilities after the games are expected to properly manage to become financially self-sustaining.

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Alhaji Issa Hayatou is already in the country at the invitation of President John Agyekum Kufuor in connection with Ghana's bid.
