Accra, June 8, GNA - Ghana has withdrawn from the four-nation Unity Cup soccer tournament slated for June 9-12 in London.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials told GNA Sports that the organisers, Optima Sports Management International Limited, were unable to pay upfront the 50,000 dollars Appearance Fee as agreed plus tickets for the contingent and a guarantee for a decent hotel. The organisers had earlier issued a cheque for the amount but it was found to be dud.
Sequel to the development, the tournament, which was also to feature Nigeria, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago had been postponed indefinitely. The tournament's website urged advanced ticket holders to return the tickets for refund, advising them to check the website regularly for the new date. The tournament was instituted in 2001 to bring black communities, especially those in the Diaspora, together to fraternise through football.
