Chairman of Globacom, Chief Dr Mike Adenuga Jr has splashed a sum of $1million on the victorious Super Eagles of Nigeria for winning the 29th Edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament South Africa.

The amount was in fulfillment of a pledge the business magnate Dr. Adenuga earlier made to the team, that if they won the cup he was going to give them US$1 million.

A statement from Glo said Dr. Adenuga presented the cheque for 160 million Naira (the equivalent of US$1million) to Super Eagles Captain Joseph Yobo at his (Adenuga’s) Abuja residence, after the team had presented the trophy to him in his Johannesburg, South Africa home a day before.

The Glo boss also announced that a Range Rover SUV and a Toyota Camry car will be presented to the Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi in addition to paying for his official accommodation.

He said: “We are indeed proud of the achievement of the Nigerian National Team at the Africa Cup of Nations. I congratulate the Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, the rest of the coaching crew, the players, the Nigerian Football Federation and the Federal Government for this important victory which has rekindled hope among our people.”

Dr. Adenuga particularly commended Coach Keshi for his commitment, adding that, “he (Keshi) has done the nation proud, that is why it is important to reward him.”

Responding to Dr. Adenuga’s gesture, Captain Yobo said: “I want to thank you very much on behalf of the team. You made a pledge to us just on Monday morning and here we are on Tuesday night for the redemption of the pledge. We thank you for everything you've done for Nigerian football; we thank you for being the No 1 supporter of the Super Eagles. This financial support you have given to us will go a long way to motivate us.”

President, Nigerian Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, thanked Dr. Adenuga for the money and the cars.

He said: “On behalf of the Nigerian football family, I want to thank you most sincerely. This relationship between Globacom and Nigerian football will endure for a long time. You have been very supportive of Nigerian football over the years, sponsoring the league and the national teams.”

The elated Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, thanked Dr. Adenuga for his support for football across Africa, adding that Super Eagles have henceforth become Dr Adenuga’s children because of all the massive support “you have given Nigerian football”.

Marketing Consultant to the NFF and Chairman of Pamodzi, Mike Itemuagbor, thanked the Globacom Chairman for consistently supporting Nigerian football in the past 10 years. He said that Globacom had within the period spent over N9 billion (about GHC90 million) in cash and kind to support the development of Nigerian football.

During the just end tournament in South Africa, Dr. Adenuga’s company, Globacom, gave both the Ghana and Nigeria national teams, the Black Stars and the Super Eagles moral support in their quest to conquer Africa. Globacom is the proud sponsor of the Black Stars, the Super Eagles and the Premier Leagues in Ghana and Nigeria. Dr. Adenuga, an accomplished businessman and first class manager of men and resources, holds the highest national honour for a civilian in Nigeria, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
