Goldfields Face Africa Sports

Ghana's sole representative in continental competition, Goldfields, have been drawn against top Ivorien club Africa Sports in the quarter-final of the CAF Cup competition , when the pairings for the last eight was held by the Confederation of African Football in Cairo yesterday.

The Obuasi lads, who surprisingly edged out Angola's AS Aviacao on a 3-2 aggregate, have home advantage in the first leg match on September 9 and then travel to Abidjan to honour the return leg tie in a fortnight's time.


Victory for Goldfields would set up a clash with either Wydad Casablanca of Morocco or Algerian club JS Kabylie who clash in the quarter-finals. Other quarter-final clashes involve Etoile Sportive of Tunisia against Ajax Cape Town, while Ferroviario of Mazambique play Camerounian side Coton Sport.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also held the draws for its flagship club competition, the Champions League, with last year's runner-up Esperance battling it out with TP Mazembe of DR Congo, Nigeria's Julius Berger and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, in Group A.


In Group B are Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Asec of Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria's CR Belouizded and Petro Atletico of Angola. The money-spinning, mini-league competition kicks off between August 10-12.
