Accra, jan 21, GNA - The government of Ghana has sent a goodwill message to Mr. Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the confederation's elections scheduled for Thursday, January 22 in the Tunisian capital, Tunis.

The message which was sent by Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, minister of Youth, Education and Sports reassured Hayatou of the "absolute commitment and total support" of Ghana for his bid for re-election as the president of CAF.

The minister said, "it is the hope and prayer of all Ghanaians" that Hayatou would emerge victorious in the election to continue the good work "towards raising the standard of soccer to the highest levels on the continent."

Ghana's support is predictable based on a visit by Mr Hayatou to Accra last month at the invitation of president John Agyekum Kufuor. Ghana is bidding to host the 2008 African Cup of Nations and appears to have the support of the incumbent president who is expected to face a stiff challenge from Ishmael Bhamje of Botswana at the polls.
