Cape Coast, Aug.17, GNA - An appeal was on Friday made to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to consider erecting a monument in honour of the late Robert Mensah, Africa's number one goalkeeper in 1971.

Mr. Manase Asare, Chief Executive of Cape Coast Bless FC, who made the appeal through the GNA Sports at Cape Coast, said the monument for the late goalkeeper who hailed from Cape Coast, should be erected in his (goalkeeper) home-town, to serve as an additional tourist attraction. The late goalkeeper, began his career with Ebusua Dwarfs in 1967, later with Sekondi Indece and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Mr Asare is of the view that such a gesture will motivate up-and-coming footballers and other sportsmen and sportswomen to "die a little for their country".

The late Robert Mensah was crowned the best goalkeeper on the continent during the African Nations Cup in Sudan in 1971, after his outstanding performance in the tournament; unfortunately, he died in November the same year. 17 Aug. 2003.
