Ali Jarra insists his nomination for an award by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) is not out of pity but in recognition of his hard work

The former Ghana goalkeeper was in the news recently for hinting to commit suicide over being neglected.

Jarra’s budding football career was abruptly truncated after sustaining an injury which left him paralyzed while on international duty back in 1993.

He has since been living on the benevolence of philanthropists while doing his little bit in training the next generation of goalkeepers.

SWAG in their launch of their annual award’s ceremony meant to reward athletes in a calendar year, cited the former Hearts of Oak player for one of their special awards.

But there are already simmering beliefs that the award was hurriedly being packaged for Jarra over his recent Facebook post which smacked off his intention to commit suicide.

But Jarra himself has dismissed these assertions – insisting his immense contribution at the grassroots levels is only being recognized.

“I have won the SWAG award before so this is not the first time,” he said.

“I have been doing a lot of work underground so this award cannot be one that is meant to only cheer me up.”
