Former Asante Kotoko head coach, Ibrahim Sunday has disclosed on Happy FM that he went into a bet with ex-Ghana President Jerry John Rawlings ahead of the 1983 Africa Champions Cup tournament.
Asante Kotoko defeated Al Alhy by a lone goal at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to win the title.
Opoku Afriyie scored the only goal of the game in that crucial encounter 36 years ago.
According to Ibrahim Sunday, the former President had told him his team was not good enough to compete in Africa that year.
The Porcupine Warriors had earlier lost the Africa Cup title to Al Alhy in 1982.
Speaking in an interview on Happy FM with Odi Asempa Kwame on Anopa Bosuo Sports he said, “In 1983 we played a game against Eleven Wise in the Champion of Champions Cup. Former President Jerry John Rawlings was the one to present the trophy in Accra.
“We lost the match and during the exchange of pleasantries, President Rawlings told me that our team was not good enough to compete in Africa. So we shouldn’t go to Africa. So I had a bet with him that in December that year we will win the title”.
“We had a bet and that even motivated me and the players to win the tournament. The players were more disciplined and motivated to win the tournament after losing the final in 1982”.
“So in the final the President came from Accra to congratulate me after winning the trophy”, he concluded.
