Growing rumours suggest that free agent Ghanaian central defender John Mensah could re-commit to Stade Rennais in the January transfer window as fellow countryman John Boye leaves the French side for the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana.
Rennes will be without John Boye as he has been named in Ghana’s Afcon squad and are also in danger of losing another centre back Onyekachi Apam should the head coach of Nigeria, Stephen Keshi include him in the final squad of the Super Eagles.
Mensah, now 30, was brilliant despite numerous injuries when he first arrived at Rennes in January 2006. He was transferred to Lyon for €8m in summer 2008.
He had a bad time in Lyon, got injured, got unfairly mugged by the police in town, and generally didn't make it there.
Plagued by injuries again when he moved to Sunderland on loan, his bad fortunes continued on and on until his Lyon contract was terminated this summer.
Mensah has now been training in Rennes since a few weeks and he seems to have convinced the staff and a come-back as a free agent seems on the card.
