Obuasi, July 10, GNA - The Obuasi Methodist Wesley Cathedral on Sunday honoured the Black Stars' central defender John Mensah for the wonderful performance he put up at the World Cup. The congregation prayed that the 91Pillar of Gibraltar' will shine to become a football star in the world.

At a special church service attended by John and his wife Henrietta, school children of Methodist Schools in the Obuasi Municipality lined up to say 'thank you' to the couple for the honour done to the nation, the Methodist Church and the Obuasi Municipality. The Cathedral presented to the couple, a beautiful Kente cloth and a decorated citation.

The Very Rev. Samuel K. Kusi, the Superintendent Minister and the Synod Secretary of the Obuasi Diocese of the Church said John Mensah has allowed God to reign in his life and his career as a footballer. "Even in Germany during the World Cup, he always prayed to God on the field of play".

In the citation, the Wesley Cathedral said "in your youthful age, your life has become an embodiment of what God has decreed for the youth".

The citation recognised the various contributions John Mensah had made to the advancement of the Church and God's work. "You single-handedly provided funds for the panelling of the Obuasi Wesley Cathedral stall to beautify the chapel as well as procuring a set of musical instruments for the singing band and supporting with a glass door for the Cathedral."

The citation added that John Mensah's Christian spirit shone at the football arena when even in Germany, he displayed Christian values of "devotion, dedication, faith, faithfulness, humility, love, loyalty, hard work and spirit of evangelism".

"It is these qualities that have been the source of your great performance on the football field - the image of Christ embossed on your singlet with you pointing to it after matches of the Black Stars in the Germany that indicates your dependence on the Omnipotent God in all your endeavours", it said.

John Mensah thanked the Church for the honour done him and his family, saying, "even in Germany the Church prayed for me and the team." He was thankful to the Lord for the talent given him and advised up and coming players to rely on the Lord. "God is our rock and we have to trust him since he never disgraces his own children, he said. 10 July 06
