Johnson Retires From Football

Former Ghanaian international Sam Johnson has quit professional football after almost twenty years involved in the senior game...

The 34 year old defender, who stepped into the international limelight in the late 90’s, told local Ghanaian newspaper The Graphic Sports that he believes the time was right for him to hang up his boots.

"The limbs cannot carry me any further and I have to accept that," he said.

"There comes a time to call it a day and I think this is the time."

Johnson won 45 caps for the Black Stars of Ghana, and was mainly known for his energetic game play and the long years of service he gave to the team.

He started his professional career with Accra Hearts of Oak in Ghana from 1991-1995 before moving over to Europe.

There he started out with Kalamata in Greece before having a stint with Anderlecht of Belgium.

Afterwards he settled down in Turkey in 1998, where he played for Gezientespor, Fenerbache and Kayserispor.
