Kumasi Schools Hold Inter-Regional Football Competition

This year?s annual Inter Regional Milo Under-12 and Senior Secondary School (SSS) Football Championships have been held in Kumasi.The eight-day championships featured 12 teams in the secondary school division while the Under-12 division had 10 teams from all the regions.

The participating teams were made up of both boys and girls, who competed in football and volleyball.

Opening the championships, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, advised the participants to eschew vices that would shorten their sporting lives.

He said that as up?and?coming sporting personalities, they were being groomed for the future so that they could step into the shoes of the adult players.The Minister stressed that sporting activities contribute to physical fitness and good health and added that these, together with healthy rivalry, cannot be separated from self-discipline. He, therefore, advised them to exhibit good behaviour at such competitions.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. S. K. Boafo, said the government was keen on improving sports facilities in the country to prevent the youth from engaging in unproductive ventures.He said plans were far advanced for the construction of two ultra-modern social centres in Accra and Kumasi so that the youth of the country would have something doing during their leisure periods.

He commended Nestle Ghana for sustaining the competition all these years.In the opening Under-12 football match, Ashanti Region beat Brong Ahafo Region by a lone goal, while Gomoa Potsin T I Ahmadiyya Secondary School defeated Prempeh College by three goals to one.
