Kwesi Appiah back after short holiday; yet to sign contract extension

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will jetted into town on Thursday after ending his holidays in London to seal a two-year contract extension with the Black Stars, GHANsoccernet.com understands.

The 54-year-old spent few weeks in London with his family to cool down following the country’s poor finish at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

GHANAsoccernet.com understands that he has cut short his holidays to seal the new deal with the Ghana FA despite his failure to guide the Black Stars beyond the group stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The former Kotoko defender received his share of criticism for the country’s shambles at the global piece.

The man nicknamed ‘silent killer’ failed to guide the Black Stars progress from the group phase of the continental showpiece after suffering two defeats and recording a draw.

Despite the massive failure, the Ghana FA has decided to keep faith with the trainer by offering him an improved two-year offer.

However, media reports in Ghana have claimed the country’s Sports Ministry have asked authorities to freeze his contract extension proposal pending further consultations.

The Black Stars aimed at being the first African country to make it into the last four of this year’s tournament but were tormented with several side issues which included an appearance fee row and disciplinary issues with some key players.

Appiah became the first indigenous coach to guide the Africans to the World Cup after previous feats were achieved by Serbians.

But the country’s shambolic performance has made him hugely unpopular among Ghanaian fans.

Ghana will begin the qualifiers for the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Morocco in September this year.
