LOC names winner of Mascot competition

Accra, Sept 22, GNA - Mr Francis Nsiah, a 27-year-old graphic designer, has been declared winner of the CAN 2008 Ghana Mascot competition, organised by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the tournament.

The designer depicted the mascot as an eagle in action as a footballer garbed in sports tugs made up of a kente shirt and black shorts piped with red, yellow and green, which represents the colours of most African nation.

According to the Press Release issued by Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Operating Officer of the LOC copied to the GNA Sports, Nsiah holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

For four years, the artist studied through the Department of Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Social Science. The mascot, which has already received the approval of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) was unveiled at the Global Launch of the competition, held at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC), two weeks ago.

Mr Nsiah who is the Creative Director of the Dynamite Communications Limited based in Accra will receive a cash prize of 30 million cedis donated by Stanbic Ghana Limited.

Mr Danquah expressed satisfaction with the choice of the mascot, saying the choice of the animal and the rich kente shirt with the colours symbolizing unity in diversity signifying the African continent. He said the artist submission for the competition also conformed to the major requirements from the organisers that the 93Mascot be an iconic animal, relevant to the fauna of the country with the potential for adoption as a symbol embodying both the tradition and passion o the people of Ghana, the host country.=94
