Accra, March 27, GNA- The Volta River Authority (VRA) on Tuesday expressed regret about its inability to assure Ghanaians of a continuous power supply tonight as the Black Stars play the Samba Boys of Brazil in an international friendly match.

Mr Joshua Kofi Ofedie, Chief Executive Officer of VRA who said this at a press conference in Accra said the current load shedding programme would be carried out at the time of the match and therefore urged soccer fans to join friends at other communities with light to watch the epic match.

He said it is regrettable that the level of the water in the Volta Lake continues to drop at a higher rate than was expected thus continuous power supply could no longer be guaranteed, adding that the VRA was currently operating below the minimum prescribed level. Mr Ofedie, however, gave the assurance that new thermal plants were expected soon in the country to augment the current power supply, all in readiness for the CAN 2008.

The press conference was intended to throw light on the new load shedding management programme, which is expected to begin from Wednesday, March 28, Mr Ofedie said.

The Chief Executive Officer said under the new load shedding management cycle of four days, customer groups would go off once during the day for 12 hours and once during the night for 12 hours within the four days period after which the cycle would be repeated. Mr Ofedie said the programme would be reviewed every two weeks to monitor the impact of the new programme with appropriate changes made where necessary.
