Marcel Desailly inaugurate projects at Agajajeter

Agajajeter, (E/R), 14 Dec., GNA - Mr Marcel Desailly, a former French football superstar and UNICEF Ambassador for children's education in Africa, on Saturday inaugurated projects at Agajajeter, in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region. They include a vocational training centre, gari processing plant, a borehole and a plan to provide education materials. The 28,000 US dollar-project that was executed by ENA Charity Foundation (ECF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), was to help improve the standard of living of the people. Inaugurating the projects, Mr. Desailly said the NGO was committed to improving the health and education of people in deprived rural communities and to establish alternative income generating activities for them.

He said the NGO had educated mothers on maternal mortality to help them take good care of themselves to prevent deaths, especially during child delivery. Mr. Desailly said the NGO had planned to replicate similar projects and interventions in deprived communities in all the ten regions of the country.

He said the Foundation had introduced a "place adoption programme", which allowed for privileged persons in the area to adopt and assist needy children from deprived homes without moving them from their families or communities.

Milicom Ghana Limited, operators of TIGO, who was the major sponsor of the projects, presented books and teaching materials to the Agajajeter Primary school and 850 Ghana cedis for organising refresher course for staff of the school to improve upon teaching. The company also presented prizes to 18 pupils of the school who excelled in academic work and hosted a Christmas party for residents of Agajajeter.

Ms. Anita Erskine, Communications Manager for TIGO, who presented the items, said the company decided to assist the people because the officials were touched by the plight of the people. To the people of Agajajeter, it was an occasion of joy as they ate, drank and danced.
