The GFA may have come out to state that John Mensah and Michael Essien remain the captain and assistant of the national football team, but a former head of the country’s football administration believes that should not be case.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has told 90 MINUTES that John Mensah’s days as captain are numbered because he falls short of the requirements of the role these days.

He argued: “If you pick a captain, he must be somebody who plays regularly for his club, not necessarily in Europe. He must be committed to the nation, be willing to die for the cause and not someone who will walk out on the nation when we need him,” Nyaho explained. Nyaho continued: “A good captain must also put in good performances for the team, must be disciplined, has the ability to read the game himself and advise the coach when things go wrong and has got control over his teammates. That’s why he’s called the captain, he leads.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe added: “Now take John Mensah for example, I was very instrumental in us making him captain because he had the above mentioned qualities and one of the best at the time. “But now he’s clubless, his form is totally down and he picks up injuries in almost every game he plays. What is the point of him being the captain when he doesn’t play?

“When you make someone captain, he must have respect, got good leadership skills, be on top of his game and above all somebody who can always be there for the team. John Mensah himself knows that he doesn’t fall in any of these categories.”
