Osei wins Tema Open

Emmanuel K. Osei scored 145 gross to win the 17th annual Tema Open Golf Championship which ended at the Tema Country Golf Club on Sunday.

George Aryeteey took the second position with 153 gross, beating Kojo Barnie on count back, Victor Torgah placed fourth with 154 gross, F. Agbavon was fifth with 155 gross while Kojo Kyei came sixth with 158 gross.

Mona Captan won the Ladies event with 173 gross, Florence Etwi-Barimah followed with 173 gross, losing on count back to Mona, Grace Komladzei took the third position with 175 gross, Suzie Abaloo placed fourth with 176 gross while Valentine Manteaw came fifth with 185 gross.

Kingsley Achey won the Handicap event with 141net, Kweku Okyere was the first runner up with 143 net, Bruce Lee placed third with 144 net, Christopher Hampton was fourth with 145 net, beating Lee Mensah on count back.

The Ladies Handicap event was won by S. S. Choo with 143 net, Betty Bimpong came second with 148 net while Elizabeth Essel-Koomson was third with 165 net.

Victor Brave-Mensah won the Professionals event with 216 gross, Baba Akologo was second with 219 g ross while K. Agbavon was third with 225 gross.

Beach Hotel jointly sponsored the three-day Scratch event, opened to amateur and professional golfers from Ghana, Togo and Benin.

Mr Mike Ezan, President of the Ghana golf Association (GGA) said the GGA would soon meet the Minister of Youth and Sports to deliberate on how best the game could be promoted.

Mr Kobina Quansah, Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana Limited, who was the Special Guest of Honour called on the government to waive the import duties and taxes on golf equipment which are imported to the country.

This, he said would enable more people to take interest in the sport.

On behalf of his bank, presented a cheque for five million cedis to support the Club's expansion project.
