Football lovers in Ghana have expressed shock after a picture of the interior of one of the Hyundai buses donated by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to Division One clubs surfaced on the internet.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by President Kurt Okraku, presented nine buses to clubs in the Access Bank Division One League on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The clubs that received the buses include Young Apostles, Victory Club Warriors, Techiman Heroes, Basake Holy Stars, New Edubiase, Ebusua Dwarfs, Vision FC, Hohoe United, and Okwawu United.
During his speech, Kurt Okraku said that the presentation of the nine buses fulfilled a promise the Executive Council of the GFA made during Congress in June 2023.
He further stressed that this would help ease the pressure on the transportation and financial issues the teams have been suffering from and added that more buses would be given out to the clubs going forward.
"Sometime back in June 2023, during our Congress in Kumasi, one of the things that I spoke about was the lack of transport for our clubs. Therefore, the FA was introducing a new policy, which we call the Bus Acquisition Strategy (BAS), that will enable our clubs to acquire buses that will allow our players to travel in comfort.
"Today, we are here to see the fulfilment of that singular promise by the Executive Committee of the FA. Nine clubs from our Access Bank Division One League will today take home one of these beautiful buses. I think the BAS Acquisition Strategy was and is part of the merit awards for the season-ending 2023-2024. The intention of the FA will be to offer buses for the upcoming season," the GFA boss said after the presentation of the buses.
However, what has gotten some football fans upset is the poor condition of the seats in one of the buses.
A picture shared on social media shows the front seats of the buses torn and some electrical parts, including its fuse, hanging around the pedal area.
One Facebook account user described the bus as a vehicle that had been abandoned for a long time.
"It's like a rejected vehicle that has been abandoned for years, what?" Eddie Kwakye Dickson asked.
Another said the donation of the vehicle is shameful.
"This is shameful, and I am so ashamed. I do not know which club this was presented to. But I don't want to believe that this was presented to New Edubiase," Felix Addae stated.
