Almost 120 soccer fans are believed to have been crushed to death at the Accra Sports Stadium after police fired teargas into a section of the crowd watching the big clash between top Ghanaian rivals, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
A stampede followed as fans tried to escape the tear gas, but the exit was too narrow to allow the large crowd through.
Latest reports from eyewitnesses said there were still motionless bodies lying in the stadium as taxis, ambulances and police vehicles helped to transport the dead and injured to hospitals in the capital city.
The match had passed off without any incident, as Hearts of Oak came from a goal down to win 2-1.
Tension had been mounting before the game. Even the referee of the match was appointed by balloting and he was announced only at the time of the match.
Kotoko chairman, Herbert Mensah has blamed the police for firing the tear gas.
A few hours after the match there was appeal on local radio stations for people to go to hospitals and donate blood.
A journalist said bodies were still being brought to the main Accra hospital as doctors tried to sort those who were unconscious from among the dead. The death toll is expected to rise.
