Pappoe gets the nod

Accra, Feb 21, GNA - Mr Fred Pappoe, Chairman of the Management Committee of the Black Stars has been elected as the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Mr Pappoe who doubles as the representative of Maamobi Mitdjyland, a Division One Football Club, competed against Mr George Amoako, Chief Executive Officer of King Faisal Football Club for the second highest position of the nation's football ruling body.

At an election held behind closed doors at the Wangara Hotel in Accra on Tuesday by the Executive Committee of the GFA, Mr Pappoe polled 12 votes as against nine by his competitor out of the total votes of 21, following the absence of one member of the 22 member Executive Committee of the GFA.

The meeting also saw the election of three members of the Executive Committee to form the Emergency Committee of the GFA. The Emergency Committee is to run the day to day administration of the GFA in consultation with the General Secretary. Six people contested for the three slots with Mr Randy Abbey, Fred Crenstil and Awuah Nyanmekye polling 14, 14 and 13 votes respectively to secure the three slots.

The three other contestants, Kudjo Fianoo, Aloysius Denkabe and Abu Jones Alhassan secured eight, seven and six votes respectively, which was not enough to grant them entry into the Emergency Committee. Abbey, Crenstil and Nyamekye would therefore join Nyantakyie and Pappoe who are automatic members of the Committee by virtue of their positions as President and Vice of the Executive Committee. Speaking to the press after his election, Mr Pappoe expressed his willingness to work hand in hand with the President to ensure the development of the game in the country.

Mr Amoako on the other hand told the GNA Sports that the results of the election is a reflection of the will of the people adding that he has no objection to it.

"I'm not worried over the outcome because I remained a member of the Executive Committee, which is the highest decision making of the GFA". Mr Amoako said the decision taken by the various committees will be subjected to scrutiny and approval of the Committee hence it would afford him the opportunity to make his input at that level. He declared "I'm committed to the development of football in the country and will contribute my quota to it no matter my position".
