Members of Parliament have urged Ghanaians to rally behind Kumasi Asante Kotoko as they prepare to play Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the African Cup Winners Cup final. The chairman of the Parliamentary select committee on Youth and Sorts, Samuel Nkrumah Gyimah, told the House that by becoming the first Ghanaian club to reach the finals of the competition, the Porcupine Warriors have demonstrated their status as the leading light for Ghana in continental club football.
Honourable Gyimah said Ghanaians should get behind Kotoko because of the importance of the game to the nation.
“I think that for the first time, everyone regardless of their affiliations would agree that Kotoko has done well. I believe that with our support, Kotoko shall conquer the Moroccans and bring honour to mother Ghana”, Honourable Gyimah said.
Contributing to the discussion, former Youth and Sports Minister E.T Mensah paid tribute to the club’s management and playing body for coming this far in the competition. E.T, often criticized for his alleged anti-Kotoko stance barely two years ago predicted a 2-0 win for Kotoko but said victory would come the hard way.
“The players would have to keep their eye on the ball and play with the same commitment and dedication they have shown throughout the campaign. Given the nature of this game, obstacles would be put in their way but they should use the obstacles as stepping-stones to glory. I believe that at the end of the day, Kotoko can win by 2-0 and make the second leg a mere formality,” E. T said.
