Phobians to pay last respect to late Nana Wereko Ampem

Accra, Feb 01, GNA - Accra Hearts of Oak sporting family made up of the Council of Patrons, Board of Directors, Management, Ladies Club, National Chapters Committee and Staff will on Thursday February 2 converge at Amanokrom to pay their last respect to the late Nana Wereko Ampem II, former President of the Council of Patrons of the Club who passed away last year in November.

A statement issued by Mr Ashford Tettey Oku, Administrative Manager of the Club, copied to the GNA Sports said the date was agreed upon following a meeting between the bereaved family and Hearts officials to enable all members of the Phobian fraternity pay their last respect and commiserate with the family.

It said the former President also known as Emmanuel Nii Noi Omaboe joined Hearts of Oak in his school days at Accra Academy in 1946 and occupied several key positions till he succeeded the late General J. A. Ankrah as President of the Council of Patrons of the Club in the mid-80s.

The statement said aside teeming up with Harry Sawyerr and the late Marc Cofie, J. W. Kpikpitse and Patrick Anim-Addo to purchase the Club's first bus;(a MARCO POLO), the Club benefited immensely from his experience, benevolence and vision, including the formation of the "Hearts 77" which produced great players like Adolph Armah, Tanko Ayuba, Baba Gambo, Hesse Odametten, Bismarck Odoi, Douglas Tagoe and the late Ofei Ansah.

It said during his reign, the Club recorded several domestic and continental honours including the elusive CAF Champions league (2000) and the unprecedented CAF Super Cup (2001), Confederation Cup (2004) and won six consecutive league titles (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002).
