Augustine Arhinful, former player of the Black Stars has backed the payment of appearance fee to players during the World Cup saying “they deserve it”.

Appearing before the Justice Senyo Dzamefe Presidential Commission of Inquiry, Arhinful said the players deserve appearance fee because they have a short career span.

According to him, the players do not have pensions to rely on after retirement, hence the need to make the best out of their career now. Airhinful, however, noted that negotiations on appearance should be concluded in Ghana before the team departs for competitions.

“I think the best thing to do next time is to make sure we agree on the amount of money for appearance fee in Ghana before the team leave for the competition.

“We should avoid negotiations whilst at competitions to avoid what happened in Brazil,” he suggested.

On mode of payments for the Black Stars, Arhinful endorsed payment through electronic system.

He said “in this modern era, I think we should do electronic system, because it is best form. But per diems and allowances should be paid in cash because the players will need to make some purchases with cash whilst at competitions”.

According to Arhinful, it was an unpleasant experience for players to keep money in the dressing room.

He said that could have also contributed to their woeful performance in the competition.
