Police to hunt for hooligans

Accra, Jan 27, GNA - Mr Kofi Boakye, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Greater Accra Regional Police Commander has said his outfit would hunt hooligans who ripped off chairs at the May 9 Stands of the Ohene Djan Stadium during the Coca Cola Top Four game involving Asante Kotoko and Kpando Heart of Lions.

The Regional Police Commander told the GNA Sports "We are prepared to hunt the offenders everywhere to prosecute them to prevent future recurrences."

This was in response to the Ghana League Clubs Association's (GHALCA) decision to forward video footages to the security agencies to aid the identification of the supporters who caused the damages. Irate Kotoko fans ripped off the re-fixed seats at the May 9 Stands and hurled them unto the tartan tracks in reaction to an 87th-minute penalty awarded Lions.

The two teams had scored a goal each when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The National Sports Council sources say that documents were being prepared to surcharge the club with the cost of over 300 damaged seats valued over 10,000 US dollars.

Mr Boakye said the police were yet to receive the video evidence from the association and expressed conviction that the exercise would go a long way in injecting discipline into the fans of the globular leather game.

Commenting on Sarfo Gyamfi, who has also been referred to the Police for his role in the abrupt end, the outspoken commander said his outfit would study GHALCA's proposal and deal appropriately with him.

"We basically deal with crimes and if it is proven that his actions contained any form of crime, then he would have no choice but to face the law."

Gyamfi and Jerry Asare, Accra Representative of Kotoko on Sunday jointly led the boycott through signals and gestures that incited their supporters and influenced their actions.

Whilst Asare was banned from holding himself as an official of Kotoko for the rest of the competition by the three-man Disciplinary Committee set up by the organizers, Gyamfi was referred to the Police after the management of Kotoko disassociated itself from the former national star when they appeared before the committee.
