Power F/C set to gun for honours

Accra, Jan. 25, GNA - In a bid to change their fortune in the Ghana Telecom Premiership in the incoming season, Power F/C have embarked on positive drives to put the team in tip-top form before the first whistle.

Having offloaded 22 of their players whose performances are downhill, the management has restricted recruitment to specialised areas in order to reduce the number on its pay roll and derive maximum benefit from their registered performers.

Prominent among the new arrivals are Abubakari Damba, the former Black Stars goalkeeper and now goalkeepers' trainer of the Black Starlets and Osei Bonsu, the first choice keeper of the Starlets. Commenting on the shuffling going on in the club after a hectic training session at their Kaa Janor grounds, Mr Emmanuel Adotey, Chairman of the Club told the GNA Sports that Power F/C would be going into the new season with a new focus designed to reward the management of Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) owners of the club, with a respectable placement in the league.

"We want to be among the first three at the end of the season to reciprocate the support we are getting from our employers and we have the materials to achieve our goal if we plan properly." Mr Adotey said they had decided to prune down the size of the playing body because it would be of no use to keep players whose presence would not support the 'revolution' going on in the team. Head coach Bashiru Hayford said he was poised to lead his charges to perform above themselves in the new season, adding that their eyes were on the Top Four.

He said that even though he had a similar ambition last season and was indeed on his trail of achieving it, he was thwarted by injury to some key players and had to play some matches without as many as six important players in the squad.

Savouring the joy of his new job, Damba said he would ensure that goalkeeping problems of the team belong to history.

He said it was his responsibility to identify the flaws each goal keeper had and assist in rectifying them, adding that he would also impart his experience in defence by organising the players so that they would be able to direct their defence line properly during matches.

Sounding very confident and content with the structures at the club, Addo Cudjoe, first choice goalkeeper said he was sure the arrival of Damba would put him in a better shape for the challenges ahead. He said he had already learnt a few tricks from Damba since his arrival and praised him for establishing a cordial working relationship with them.

"As soon as he arrived, he fitted into the system and established a very friendly relationship with us and that has given us a lot of encouragement and hope and we shall surely benefit from his stay," he said.

The goalkeeper praised the management of the team for taking good care of the players and vowed to reciprocate their gesture by playing excellently during the new season.
