Princesses chase quarter-final slot

Ghana’s Black Princesses could land a historic quarter-final berth if they are able to go past Korea DPR in their second group match at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Friday night.

Both teams go into the match with wins from their first matches. 2006 champions, Korea DPR beat Finland 2-1 to move to the summit of the table, while Ghana follow in second place after a 1-0 win over host nation, Canada.

Bashir Hayford’s girls know a win over Korea DPR at Toronto’s National Soccer Stadium would be a major boost after Ghana failed to go past the group stages in their last two appearances.

"We already learnt our first lesson: in a World Cup, nothing will be easy. We suffered, but we won. I had said before the tournament that we had the potential to win the World Cup.

"I don’t know if we’ll do it, but we do see some signs. And we sent a signal that we’re not here for fun - we’re here for business," Hayford told Fifa.com.

For his part, Korea DPR’s coach, Hwang Yong-Bong takes delight in the good start after the win over Finland.

"I’m very happy to have won the first game; everybody knows how important it is to have a good start in a tournament."

Finland and Canada will clash in the other Group A match as both sides attempt to bring their campaign on track.
