Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila is two wins away from winning the South African League title with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Closest rivals Kaizer Chiefs lost grounds in the title race after being held to a goalless draw by Wits University on Wednesday.

The results means the Brazilians will clinch their first Absa Premier League title in seven years with victories over SuperSport United and Maritzburg United.

The record-five time champions will host their Pretoria neighbours this weekend before they visit United two weeks later

Africa’s richest domestic prize is now well within their reach as they must negotiate the decisive two games to make it count.

A couple of victories and Sundowns, a club bankrolled by mining billionaire Patrice Motsepe, will have an unassailable lead.

The team that have won their last nine league games are on 61 points, and defending champions Chiefs have 56 and Wits 52 with three fixtures each to play.

At stake is a 10 million rand ($950,000-690,000 euros) champions’ cheque and a place in the even more lucrative 2015 CAF Champions League.

Sumaila has been towering at the back for the side since he joined at the start of the season.

He is in line to make Ghana’s squad to June’s World Cup in Brazil after a fabulous campaign.
