Accra, March 1, GNA - The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has registered its protest with the organizers, the way they have handled the media accreditation of Wednesday evening Glo-CAF Awards scheduled for the Accra International Conference.

A statement signed by Mr Ackah Antony, President of SWAG asked the media to use the protest to express their displeasure with organisers for the abysmal way they are treating the Ghanaian sports press.

"We are totally disappointed that with few hours to the opening of a major event of this nature, Ghanaian journalists are still struggling to get accreditation to cover the event".

"The organisers have for some weeks now been very evasive with the Association on accreditation for sports journalists with the promise that media passes would be issued in due course. However, nothing has been done to this effect".

It said, the association is not in the least happy with the turn of events, especially when Sport Journalists are being forced to struggle for accreditation instead of getting ready for the event.

"To us this treatment is a sign of gross disrespect to the local sports media. Information reaching us has it that most members of the foreign media are also confronted with similar problems in securing accreditation for the programme".

The statement said, 93though we recognize the huge task confronting the organisers in putting up a programme of this nature, we are sure that a ceremony showcasing the development of soccer on the continent cannot be handled in that manner.

"We cannot help but to distance ourselves from the event as a result of the way and manner Ghanaian sports journalists are being treated".

It said since sports writers, and journalists, for that matter, have a great role to play in the development of the game, they should be accorded that respect and recognition.
