Schlupp wins Leicester award

Jeffrey Schlupp has been named Leicester City’s Young Player of the Year at the club’s end of year ceremony.

The Foxes secured their Premier League survival this weekend, when a 0-0 draw with Burnley coupled with defeats for Newcastle United and Hull City confirmed their place in the 2015-16 EPL.

Nigel Pearson’s side celebrated their successful escape from the relegation zone with a night out in an East Midlands nightclub on Saturday evening. They then had their achievements recognised at the club’s end of season awards evening.

Schlupp claimed two of the club’s awards.

He was named young player of the year, beating off competition from Matty James and Andrej Kramaric, while also picked up the player’s player of the year prize—ahead of Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy.

Esteban Cambiasso was named player of the year, ahead of Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel, while David Nugent picked up the goal of the year award.

The team’s match of the season was the 5-3 victory over Manchester United, a glorious comeback triumph in which Schlupp played five minutes.

Despite going 13 league games without a victory before Christmas, despite spending 140 days at the foot of the league table and despite picking up only 19 points by the beginning of April, Leicester look set for a mid-table finish.

They have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround over the last few months, winning six of their last eight matches, drawing once and losing only one match—against champions Chelsea—since the end of March.

Schlupp has played his part as a versatile, forward-thinking left-sider.

He featured 31 times in the top flight, making 29 starts, scoring three times and contributing one assist.

The Black Star missed the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations due to reported injury concerns, but he returned to the fold for the national side’s recent pair of international friendlies against Senegal and Mali.
