Senegal name preliminary squad

Senegal - one of Bafana Bafana's opponents in Group D at the Africa Cup of Nations - have named a massive 38-man preliminary squad ahead of the 26th edition of the African jamboree to be held in Ghana next year.

The West Africans’ coach, Henri Kasperczak, has announced an all-foreign based squad that doesn't have a single player plying his trade in the Senegalese domestic League.

As usual, controversial skipper El-Hadji Diouf will lead the Lions of Teranga, who are being touted as one of the pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy.

There are five players in the squad who have never been called up before, while veteran left back Omar Daf makes a surprise return.

Kasperczak is also keeping his goalkeeping options open, having called up five stoppers to the preliminary squad.

The group will have to be trimmed down to 23 by January 10, the cut-off for final squads to be submitted to organizers of the tournament that runs from January 20 to February 10.

Senegal start their Group D campaign against Tunisia on January 23, before taking on Angola (January 27) and finally Bafana Bafana (January 31) in their final group match.
