South Africa captain Senzo Meyiwa, who prevented Fatau Dauda from being Orlando Pirates first choice goalkeeper, has been murdered in a gun shot incident in Johannesburg on Sunday evening, South African police have confirmed.
Meyiwa had visited girlfriend Kelly Khumalo when he was shot by unidentified gun-men and was pronounced dead when he was rushed to the hospital.
South Africa police reported on Twitter that and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has been shot dead in Johannesburg.
The 27-year-old captained his club side in their 4-1 win against Ajax Cape Town on Saturday night. But the South African police service broke normal protocol to tweet that Meyiwa, who has also led the Bafana Bafana in recent games, was killed on Sunday.
“We can confirm that Bucs (Pirates) keeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot and sadly declared dead on arrival at hospital,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said on its twitter feed.
The SAPS took to Twitter to communicate with an emotional public, who’ve rushed to the scene and to the hospital.
According to unconfirmed reports, Meyiwa was at his girlfriend’s home in Vosloorus when a man demanded his cellphone and opened fire. Meyiwa was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police reported that seven men entered the house where Meyiwa was shot, where an altercation took place
The South African goalkeeper was reportedly shot before the suspects fled on foot. He was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
Tributes have been pouring in across the continent with soccer fans tweeting about the incident which occurred in the evening of Sunday.
Meyiwa’s national team-mates Dean Furman and Andile Jali were quick to tweet their condolences.
