Sunday's Win Could Boost Afranie's Chances

Last Sunday's 3-0 win over Benin by the senior national team, the Black Stars, could bolster the chances of caretaker coach Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie to be named as permanent helmsman of the four-time African Champions.

Goals from Wisdom Abbey, William Tiero and Michael Asante did the damage repairs for the coach who was heavily criticised after losing 0-1 to neighbouring Nigeria in a similar friendly exercise at the Accra Sports Stadium late last year.

This result, seemed to have galvanised the coach into action as he prepares his locals squad of 19 to avenge the defeat in Lagos this weekend. That dream, could be further enhanced as the skipper of the Stars' Stephen Appiah, plans to join the team for the Lagos battle.

Also likely to make the trip are Michael Essien, Anthony Obodai and Baffour Gyan, all prepared to pay their own airfare to redeem the country's sinking image.

The Super Eagles are also in a rebuilding exercise and would feature predominantly a local squad for the match billed for the main bowl Surulere stadium.

Coach Afranie told GNA Sports in a telephone conversation that he hopes to build a winning local team capable of conquering any soccer force on the continent.

He said it is his wish to be allowed to use the boys he has started grooming cum some few foreign-based to play the rest of the African Nations Cup qualifiers to prove a point.

Asked what went right on Sunday, the coach said, "my boys played according to instructions and were also prepared to established themselves in the new Black Stars".

Coach Afranie is one of the four - Abdul Razak, Portuguese Manuel Gomes and Burkard Ziese of Germany - shorlisted for the top job. They would appear before a panel on February 2 for interview.
