The Facts Behind Ofori-Quaye's Troubles

Thu, 19 Sep 2002 Source: Network Herald

At the age of 16, he was hailed as the next George Oppon-Weah but now, the 22-year-old Ghanaian striker; Peter Ofori-Quaye finds himself on Piraeus Olympiakos' unwanted list though still part of the first 18.

But at Olympiakos if you are not wanted you are paid to leave and write off the millions paid you as a player. That's what happened in Peter Ofori Quaye’s case, but the Ghanaian striker has knocked the money offered back to Olympiakos' court.

Reports reaching the Network Herald indicate that the striker was summoned to Olympiakos chairman, Mr. Louvaris's office where he was offered a proposal stating that Olympiakos would pay 50% of his final years salary and release him from their contractual obligations, free to sign elsewhere.

Peter Ofori-Quaye agreed, until Mr. Louvaris reneged on this offer. The offer changed to 10% to release Ofori-Quaye from his shackles. The Ghanaian has refused to leave and rightly so, Olympiakos on their part have shown little interest in resolving the troubles.

Surprisingly, Louvaris is not rushing to see the Ghanaian back. What many Greek soccer fans wonder about is the manner in which Olympiakos is treating Ofori-Quaye irrespective of his contribution to the team he once helped to attain greater heights.

Ofori-Quaye was directed to train on his own without supervision, at the training headquarters at Renti. The Ghanaian together with Liberian player, Zizi Roberts used to train alone whiles construction workers on the site and by passers talked about their situation and the conditions, under which they train considering the bulldozers packed around.

Sources also wondered why the Greek media first stated that; Peter Ofori-Quaye did not arrive early from Ghana. Further investigations by Herald indicate that it appears, however, that the 22-year-old was unfortunate enough to be involved in an argument with the coach, Takis Lemonis during a training session and was ordered to leave the training grounds.

Injuries are also believed to have contributed to the young Ghanaians international’s problems with his club. He was in Olympiakos' first 18-man-squad that beat German side Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 on Wednesday in the European Champions League match and came on in the 83rd minute.
