Uganda captain Andrew Mwesigwa admits his team needed to play defensive at times to avoid being exposed in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Ghana in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played in Kumasi.

The Cranes secured a vital point against the Black Stars who are still suffering from the effects of their shameful exit from the 2014 World Cup.

Tonny Mawejje handed Uganda a surprise lead just a minute to halftime to stun the hosts.

But Andre Ayew scored from the spot to ensure parity six minutes into the restart.

The Black Stars were unable to add to their tally as the hardworking Cranes snapped at their heels at any given chance to secure the vital away point.

Captain Mwesigwa concedes his team need to dig in at times to avoid being exposed against a high quality Black Stars side.

“We came with a tactic of defending as a team and attacking as a team,” he said.

“When you are playing away, you don’t need to expose yourself.

“With a team like Ghana, if you expose yourself, they will beat you so we needed to close up when it was necessary.”

Ghana will face Togo in their next qualifying match on Wednesday.
