The gala competition formed part of the NYC and AYA Challenge Cup project for the youth that is meant to use sports as a medium to educate them on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS.

Addressing the teams after the competition, Mr Charles Yeboah, the Atwima District Chief Executive said as a nation striving to empower its youth for national development, "we must not lose sight of the health challenges that face our youth".

He pointed out that, sportsmen and women can encourage their fans to learn more about reproductive health and to lead responsible lives and that the programme to use sports to educate the youth on reproductive health and sexuality was in the right direction.

Mr Yeboah said government perceived the risk that HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases posed to all aspects of social and economic development as being of prime importance.

He said, "It is therefore necessary for all organisations and agencies whose work impinge on the development of the youth to be actively involved in programmes and projects that will impact positively on them".
