In a heart-pumping game at the Sogakope Park, West Africa Football Academy won the Volta Regional derby 2-1 on Match week 21 of the First Capital Plus Bank Premier League.
Umar Bashir's goal on the 21st minute was cancelled by Osman Sackey 11 minutes after recess, but Kennedy Boateng left it late from the penalty spot to sink Lions. WAFA dominated proceedings from the blast of the referee’s' whistle, though Heart of Lions had their fair share play in the game
A meeting of the two heavyweights in the Volta Region - Sogakope derby, once the pair got into their stride they put on a show of attacking football the fixture warranted, with an end-to-end action. Heart of Lions was the first to test Abalaro in the WAFA goal, but he gathered with aplomb.
However it was the home side (WAFA) who would come closest in the early exchanges, with Ashimeru Majid through ball finding Samuel Tetteh, the low shot was feeble and Mozart Adjetey had no worries gathering that, before Mumuni Zakaria worked his way into the box and fired inches wide.
Lions were on the front foot, but they suddenly found themselves shoved back off balance after a lightning break. Samuel Tetteh led the counter and, with Martin Antwi in support, the ball was rolled into the path of the WAFA captain who missed with only the keeper to beat.
Lions found the equalizer they toiled all afternoon for, but a late controversial penalty on the 90th minute was converted by substitute Kissi Boateng to break the Lions hearts.
