Banjul, Gambia, May 21, GNA - The West Africa Football Federation (WAFU) has put in place plans to reintroduced its inter club championships by 2007. The competition this time will be coming with innovations that will make it attractive for clubs in member countries to participate.

Among some of the attractive packages for the competition will be the involvement of corporate bodies to provide funding for participating clubs. Other innovations are however currently under discussions by a special committee set up by WAFU headed by Hina Souley.

Lt. Col Jean Baptist Parkouda, Chairman of Organisation and Disciplinary Committee of WAFU told the GNA Sports that other events such as seniors, juvenile and women championships will also be introduced by the Union which are all under discussions by the Committee.

According to Lt. Col. Parkouda the introduction of the competitions are part of the efforts to make WAFU, which has been dormant for the past years to be more active in the sub region. Lt. Col. Parkouda said the move is also to promote soccer in the sub region as well as give local players more opportunities to market their talents.

According to Lt.Col. Parkouda only local players will be made to take part in the competitions that are to be introduced.

Lt. Col. Parkouda hinted that telecommunications and airline companies have already been approached by the Union for sponsorship and most of them have expressed interest in all the events.

He said that the Union has commenced discussions with the possible ones and expressed the hope that they will help in the organisation of the event when the time is due.

WAFU has for the past years been unable to organise such popular events with the Clubs Championship dying out of the system due to lack of funds.

The Union however saw massive reorganisation last year and all efforts are being put in place to revive its activities.

Ghanaian clubs like Sekondi Hassacas and Tema GHAPOHA are on record to have once won the Club championships.
