Black Stars striker Abdul Majeed Waris left his Ghana teammate Jonathan Mensah in the agony of defeat after stunning his Evian TG side in their French Ligue 1 clash on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old lifted Valenciennes to another crucial win in the French top-flight when he struck a powerful ball home in the 62nd minute to silenced Evian TG at their own backyard.
Waris added Mensah to his list of international teammate victims after scoring against John Boye’s Stade Rennes last weekend. Mensah came off the bench in the 86th minute to play in the game but he could hardly impact the score line.
Before the game on Thursday, the two players entered into a war of words with each promising to beat the other in a keenly contested game, but at the end of regulation time at the Parc des Sports, it was Waris who emerged victorious while Mensah was left to deal with the defeat.
Mathieu Dossevi crashed a header at the back post down towards goal; Hansen managed to punch clear, but only as far as Waris, with the Ghanaian making no mistake in crashing home his sixth goal since his winter loan signing from Spartak Moscow.
Waris’s scoring form in the Ligue 1 has been of great support to Valenciennes who are facing the dangers of relegation but his latest world-class performance has also left Jonathan Mensah’s Evian TG as likely candidates for relegation.
Since arriving in the Ligue 1, the former Swedish Allsvenskan Golden Shoe Winner has maintained a good form scoring 6 times in 10 games an average of 0.6.
