....as Eagles' World Cup Chances Dim
Nigeria's Super Eagles may be as a good as out of the 2002 World Cup competition stated for Korea and Japan if the latest political antics of Liberia's soccer idol, George Opong Weah are anything to go by.
P.M.Sport authoritatively gathered that the former World Footballer of the Year who is desperate to see his country to its first ever World Cup appearance has doled out the sum of $10,000 (N14 million) to both the Ghana Football, Association (GFA) and Abedi Pele's campaign for the GFA presidency.
An impeccable source close to the GFA informed that Weah who was in Accra, Ghana recently to condole with the association over the recent death of some fans in a stadium disaster, made the donation in two instalment of $5,000 each.
The source disclosed that the Marseille of France forward made the first donation to the GFA as a token to the families of the stadium disaster while the second was for Abedi Pele's campaign for the GFA top job after publicly declaring his support for the former Black Stars captain.
He revealed that aside from the donations made by the AC Milan goal poacher, he has concluded talks with the GFA to organise an international charity match between the Black Stars and an African selected side in Accra. The proceed of the match, it was scooped, will go to the family of the fans who lost their lives during the stadium disaster.
According to our reliable source, Weah who has publicly lampooned the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has been whipping up sympathy of Liberia's World Cup aspirations among Ghanaians who see his recent gesture as commendable. "The general feeling in Ghana now is that of sympathy towards George Weah and his compatriots in their bid to qualify for the 2002 mundial. Many Ghanaians are rooting for his country to qualify ahead of the Super Eagles," stated the source.
As things are now, the Super Eagles, even if they defeat Sudan and Ghana in remaining matches will bank on Liberia losing or drawing any of its two remaining matches against Ghana and Sierra Leone to qualify for Korea Japan 2002.
