Former national team hitman Tony Yeboah is backing former teammate Kwesi Appiah to achieve in his role as the Ghana national team coach. Yegoala has told 90 MINUTES that the performance of Appiah in the tough job is one that everyone is waiting for with heated breath because of it’s consequences on future appointments to the position.
“The local coach to become the national team coach is our wish because we don’t want a white coach who could leave us midway or whose heart is not even in it with us. So we are all supporting Kwesi to succeed. We are all supporting him but what Ghanaians want is for the Black Stars to be successful so we are praying that he plans and combines well with the players to win matches and competitions for Ghana,” said Yeboah who played alongside Coach Appiah for the Black Stars at Senegal 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.
Yeboah has switched sports since retiring from the pitch and plays golf these days, insists only success under the tutelage of Kwesi Appiah can ensure that the national team helmsman’s job remains reserved for indigenes. Yegoala told us: “He’s doing very well, he played about three matches, got one win, one loss and one draw.
It’s not bad but we are looking forward that he can do something well to open the way for local coaches coming up. Because if Kwesi doesn’t succeed, it means a big disappointment for black coaches. All Ghanaians are backing him so he has to do very well to perform so he can open up the way for the likes of C.K. Akunnor, Frimpong Manso, Maxwell Konadu, Yaw Preko and many others.”
