Zamalek seek venue switch from Ghana

Egyptian club Zamalek are asking the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a switch in the venue of this year's African Super Cup from Ghana because of concerns about safety, officials said on Tuesday.

The African Champions League winners Ghana's Hearts of Oak will host the game against Zamalek, who won last year's African Cup Winners' Cup, in the one-off game at Accra's Sports stadium on February 11.

The venue was the scene of supporter violence last month as Hearts won a controversial match against Esperance of Tunisia in the second leg of the Champions League final. Fans pelted match officials with objects and police had to resort to tear gas.

Ghana are expected to suffer some sanction from CAF as a result of the disturbances, including the possibility of a one-year ban on matches at the stadium. A decision is expected later this week.

Zamalek are hoping the match will be switched to their home venue in Cairo where they have rarely suffered defeat in continental competition.

The African Super Cup was traditionally played at a neutral venue but suffered from a lack of crowd interest. CAF changed the format in 1996 with the Champions League winners now hosting the game.
