Claude Le Roy would enter next month’s African Cup of Nations without Stephen Appiah because injury has forced the Black Stars captain to sit out of the competition. But the coach maintains that, hope has not been lost for the Black Stars.

The Frenchman gave a positive response about Ghana’s chances in an interview with the BBC in the wake of his star player’s absence.

Despite the player’s inability to feature, Le Roy is not finished with him yet as he still has a role for his captain.

Le Roy wants Stephen Appiah around the rest of the team during the build up to the competition.

"Even without Stephen we'll try to do our best to win the competition.

"That's why I want him to join us for our training camp and if possible to be with us during the tournament as well.

"We will use him as a special adviser because he can bring a lot to the team even without playing."

The Black Stars captain has been forced to sit out of the tournament to be hosted by Ghana by a troubled knee injury.

And Le Roy admits that Stephen Appiah, who has remained an integral part of his team, would be sorely missed.

"It's terrible news for all the Ghanaian people because it won't be the same team without him.

"It was difficult for me to sleep when I heard the news that he was out. It's a huge problem," Le Roy said.
